New born baby? How to mange your daily routine..

Congratulations you have a new born baby and if you are first time mum then welcome to parenthood.
I have seen many mums struggling to carry out their daily routine once they have a baby.
Here are few tips which will help them to work out when and what can they do.

Timings: New born baby will be more often hungry for first 10 days especially if you are breast feeding.First 3 four days you have to feed them whenever they cry.And for breast feeding you have to offer them more so your body will produce more milk.In case of bottle feeding babies dont get hungry much quicker. In  first five days you will get the idea how often your baby is hungry.I will suggest you to write it down time when you offer them milk, and how much milk they drank . Then each feed write the time down. After 24 hours look at your table it will give you a clear idea how often your baby drinks milk and how much.
Now you can plan when to go out for shopping and find a place to feed them when the feed time is near.

Baby Cries: You need to learn what is baby cry for hunger.Because baby can cry for so may reasons they might be tired, sleepy, uncomfortable in the position we put them in, they might feeling hot, they might have dirty nappy etc.You have to look for hunger sign usually babies start putting their fingers in their mouth get restless and make slow cries with a gap and if they dont get milk they cries louder. This mean they are hungry plus timetable chart can help you to guess as well.Following link might help you for better understanding of baby cry.

Cook easy recipe food:And if you dont have any family to support and have older children to look after,  it is very stressful to breastfeed. In this case it will be a good idea that you keep some food ready in your freezer for first five days. After that  use simple and easy recipes for cooking like pasta with a ready made pasta sauce, stir fried noodles, chicken fried rice, cheese potato pie with beans, yogurts or custard for desert with any cake made by cake mix powders etc, There are many simple ways easy and quick recipes are very handy for you to prepare and feed other members of family.( I will be adding easy cook recipes for Asian and world food in my time to time that might be useful).

Skin eczema?.. You can control it!

What is eczema?

Eczema is a dry, itchy skin condition that affects up to one in five children. It usually appears for the first time before your child is two years old. The good news is that most children who have eczema will grow out of the condition by the time they are in their teens. Eczema can't be cured, but it can be controlled with the right treatments.
Eczema is also known as atopic eczema, or atopic dermatitis. Atopic means that your child has inherited the tendency to develop conditions such as eczema, asthma and hayfever. The end result is the same: dry, itchy, red and cracked skin, which can sometimes ooze fluid and bleed. The areas most affected in babies are the hands, face, neck, elbows and backs of the knees
Having eczema means that the skin's barrier doesn't work as well as it should, which makes it drier. His skin will be more prone to infections and allergens can enter the skin more easily, which can make the condition worse.

How to control eczema?
So far no one knows exactly what causes eczema. But as a mum you will be worried if your child is having skin eczema. This is true that you can not treat eczema  completely. But there are so many ways you can control it and your baby's and child's skin can look as clearer as others. I have been given these tips to control eczema  by my health visitor and I followed all of them and still following them and  it really worked . Result is my daughter's skin is as clear as my other child who does not have eczema. Please read carefully and do try them all. Iam sure as a mother you want best for your child.

Avoid perfumed Bath soaps Or Shampoos:
First of all if you have new born baby please do not use perfumed bath soaps or oil. Listen to your midwife. Here in UK they advise us give new born baby bath with water only at least first ten days. if you think carefully water is natural where perfumed bath soaps are full of chemicals. Keep your baby away from chemicals as much as you can. Especially if your baby is having sign of eczema.
And if you have older child diagnosed eczema then too i would say use the lotion and shampoo made for eczema treatment. They are with no perfume.

Stay away from perfume:
As a mother or parent you should avoid perfumes or body sprays especially if you have infants with you. When ever you pick them up their sensitive skin will get in touch with perfume which may flare their eczema rash.
In older children I will advise them not to use perfumes or body sprays. As a parent if you encourage them it will be much easy for them. Or at least do not let perfume directly get contacted to their skin.

Room Temperature:
Too much heat can flare up eczema so keep your house ventilated enough. In case of babies avoid wrapping them in too much clothes and keep the room temperature temperate

Cotton Clothes:.
Use only 100% cotton clothes. They are soft and gentle for their sensitive skin. Other wise nylon or silky clothes can flares up their eczema before you notice.Avoid fleece blankets or velour clothes.

Non bio washing powder:
There are two kind of washing powders Biological or Non Biological washing powder .Like me there will be lots of mums who are unaware of it. Non biological washing powder is suitable for eczema skin and for babies. You can buy them from any supermarkets or check on your washing powders they do have this description on them that are they bio or non bio. In UK we do have Fairy Non Bio washing powder and even we do have Asdsa and Tesco Non Bio washing powders.

Use creams and lotions prescribed for Eczema:
Use your prescribed creams and lotion whenever needed . Always keep spares at home so you do not run out of them and if you do use E45 it usually suits eczema skin. Its not necessary that all creams suit your child always use one at a time and if your child's skin react to it change the cream. There might be any ingredient  in that cream that does not suit your child's sensitive skin.

Health Visitors:
In UK i will advise all my friends to consult Health visitors for any confusion they have. They will guide them on every step like my health visitor did.

Information links for skin eczema:
You can find much more support or information and help online especially non UK residents I will suggest to check online for more details .There is  plenty information available for eczema. Here are some links.

How to treat "Nappy Rash"

If your baby has nappy rash there are so many ways to treat your baby at home.

  • If you notice soreness and redness on your baby's nappy area, clean and  wipe them with wet cotton . Water is the best way to clean. Then dry it and apply nappy rash cream before putting clean nappy.
  • Give your baby nappy free time as much as you can.If your baby is toddler and move around a lot its best to keep their nappy off while they are sleeping and cover them with cotton cloth .You can place plastic mat  with cotton sheet  under your baby s bottom so their bed stays dry. Keep checking on them if they wet themselves use wet cotton to wipe and change the cotton sheet underneath.Air and water are the best to treat  nappy rash.
  • Give them bath with water only and let them sit in water for a while. This will help to heal the rash faster.
  • Usually nappy rash will go away within three to four days especially if you treat it straight away.If not then you have to consider your health visitor or GP.
  • Some nappies might cause rash to your baby(some babies have very sensitive skin). In this case change the nappy brand choose different good quality brand which is more soft and gentle to their skin.Trust me it has happened to me, my child was having nappy rash even I was changing her frequently then I changed the nappy brand and it has solved the problem.
It is best to avoid babies to get rash in the first place. Check my post
 "How to avoid nappy rash".

How to avoid "Nappy Rash"

What is nappy rash?
Nappy rash is redness or soreness appears on your baby's bottom and nappy area.

How to avoid nappy rash?
Nappy rash is very common in babies. At some stage of parenthood you will  find your baby with rash. It can happen no matter whether you use washable  or disposable nappy. But there are few ways that can help you to avoid nappy rash.

  • In case of new born you have to change nappy quiet often as they soiled nappy frequently. You have to make sure that you check on there nappy every time after feeding. Because some time they poo very little that you can not smell it and if you do not check you would not know.In result you will leave your baby longer in the nappy  by the time you check or change nappy you find their bottom sore.
  • The main reason of nappy rash is that your baby 's skin is in direct touch of wee or poo for long time.To avoid this situation you should make sure that you change baby's nappy often .Do not leave them in one nappy more than 4 hours. Some nappies are very absorbent so they do not look heavy or full but this does not mean you leave baby in one nappy whole day. You should change baby's nappy at least five times a day.
  • I have seen many moms who avoid changing baby's soiled nappy because baby has fallen sleep. Please do not do this to your baby. First babies cries once they soiled  and only sleeps if  they are extremely tired. So even if they start falling sleep you should change their nappy. Leaving them sleep in dirty nappy means that you are leaving poo in touch with their skin longer and it will cause a really bad rash. This is very useless excuse  that baby will cry , baby cries for lots of wrong reasons but we think of their safety first so why not think of their skin?
  • There is possibility that you have to leave them in dirty nappy even if you do not want to, for example  you are driving a car.I can understand in this case if your are traveling on long route please stop on any break point and change your baby .Or if you are in your city but aiming for any long meeting or party or shopping I will advice you to stop by any supermarkets with toilet facility and change your baby's nappy .Do not think its waste of time 10 minutes will not make difference in your schedule but leaving baby in dirty nappy longer for an hour will cause  painful effect on your little one.Think of your baby once how much they will be uncomfortable in dirty nappy.
  • If your baby is having diarrhea I will advice you keep checking on them as they soil change them and after wiping use wet cotton to wipe their bottom because diarrhea leaves bad smell as well. Try to keep your baby's skin as clean as possible.
  • When ever change your baby's soiled nappy make sure their bottom is properly clean and their is no poo left on their skin before putting on clean nappy.
  • Make sure that nappy is not so tight it should be right size so there will be room for some air.
  • Where ever you go with baby always take your nappy and wipes with you.You do not know you might need them and how long you might have to stay out.
If your baby is already having nappy rash please read my next post "How to treat nappy rash."

All about bottle feeding

Breast feeding is the best natural source to feed baby. However there are so many reasons why some mums has to choose bottle feeding. What ever the reason are if you are bottle feeding or mixed feeding your baby you need to know everything how and what precautions you should take while bottle feeding.

Boiled water:
  •  Always use cool or warm boiled water to prepare milk for your little ones.
  •  Water should be freshly filled in kettle and boil. Once its boil take it out in clean Thermos or jar.
  • Make sure your boiled water is been covered properly.
Cleaning your bottles:
  • Always use bottle brush with washing up liquid to wash your bottle and bottle teat. This bottle brush should not be use for any other washing up.
  • After washing your bottle it is recommended to sterilize your bottles. For sterilizing you can use any sterilize liquid (milton), sterilize tablets, steam sterilizers or simply put bottles to boil in hot water for at least 5 minutes.
How to prepare bottle for feeding:

  • To make bottle add warm boiled water and add one spoon of formula milk  for one ounce water. You can see instruction on the formula milk packaging as well. And mix it well by shaking bottle.
  • To warm up your baby s milk bottle use bottle warmer or use hot water. Place your bottle in hot water pot until is warm enough to drink.DO NOT USE MICROWAVE for your infants milk.
  • Always make fresh bottle for every feed.
  • If baby do not finish milk at once use that milk with in one hour. In hot weather it is advisable to discard left over milk .Do not restore left over milk.
  • Do not reheat your bottle milk.
  • Always check the temperature of the milk before giving it to baby. Best way is to put drops on your wrist. Your misjudgment can burn your little ones mouth and might cause blisters as well.
Cows milk:
  • Cows milk can be offer to baby once baby is over 6 months.
  • When offer cows milk first time, give them small amount to make sure your child is not allergic to lactose.
  • I would advise to warm milk in hot water or bottle warmer and avoid microwave.
  • If you do use microwave to warm milk shake the bottle well. Otherwise it creates hot spots on the top.
Bottle Teats:
When you buy feeding bottles usually they have teats which are suitable from birth. Once your baby is six months they need different teat. Whatever brand bottle you use you can find  teats with numbers for each stage. You do need to change teats because as your baby grows they will drink more amount of milk and with newborn teat their mouth gets tired of sucking and in result they do not finish their feed at once.Sometimes they get frustrated as well.

All about weaning your little one

What is weaning?

Weaning is the first introduction of solid food to your infant. When you start weaning your baby you start from paste texture to lumpy and then solid food step by step. It is advisable not to wean baby before six months however you will find weaning jar food in supermarket from age 4 months.

How do you know when your baby is ready for weaning:

As a first time mom you will be confuse how do you know your baby is ready for weaning? You might get different opinions from different sources but I will say you need to see sign of weaning in your baby. Each child is different and their needs are different too. Even in siblings you will notice differences.

Watch your BABY:

Before start weaning watch your baby carefully.Your baby's behavior will tell you if they are ready for weaning. As baby grows their hunger grows if your child is happily feeding on milk and sleeping well this mean you don't need to rush into weaning. When you notice that baby's sleep pattern looks disturb they keep waking up in middle of sleep and demand milk this mean milk is not enough to fulfill their hunger . Now you need to start weaning your baby.
Note:
But if your baby is only 4 months old and looks hungry I will suggest add formula  milk before sleep. Some formulas are design to delay baby's weaning like Aptamil milk for hungry baby etc.

How to start:
Now once you have decided that you will wean your baby. Go easy on him. Always remember that so far baby was only on liquid milk, start from any cereal made by formula milk or water. If you want to use cows milk make sure your baby should be at least six months. Start giving them from few spoons a day. Best time is to use cereal at main lunch time. Then once you see your baby is settle on that cereal you can start giving him twice or try out different flavors one by one.

Jar Food:
Jar food or ready made food is available massively in supermarket. These ready made food are healthy and very quick and easy way to wean your baby. Especially if you are in rush or with very busy routine you can rely on these ready made food. There are few things you need to know while you are using ready made food.
  • Always check the age which is recommended on the food label.
  • When you buy make sure you use them until they are valid.
  • Once open your baby food do not store it longer then the recommended time on the food instruction. Usually you can use open food jar with in 24 hours or maximum 48 hours if you store in fridge.

Precautions while using jar food:

Jar food are easy and quick way to feed your baby but if there is any misuse of using or storing food it will cost your baby health .So you have to take following precautions while using baby food or jar food.

  • Try to buy small jars so your baby can finish them in one go and you do not have to store it for later. It will save your money as well.
  • When you warm up your jar food DO NOT USE MICROWAVE. Always use hot water or food warmer (bottle warmer) to warm baby's food. Best thing is if you are not sure your baby will eat all the food take the amount of food your baby usually eat warm it in hot water. Once its warm mix it and check  that its not too hot for baby to eat (so they do not burn their mouth).
  • Do not store warm food for later. Once its warm you use it and discard the left over.
  • Do not put used spoon in the jar or food you want to store for later.
  • If you are offering your baby any food first time keep an eye on your baby.If there is any sign of red spots or rash appear while feeding STOP RIGHT THERE.  Your baby might be allergic to any ingredient used in the food.

Home Made baby food:

If you have time you can prepare your baby food by yourself. Things you have to consider are:

  • Use fresh food items while preparing baby's food.
  • Always use boiled water.
  • Do not add chilies, or salt in the food.
  • Discard left overs.
  • If you have stored them in fridge warm it in hot water or on fire. DO NOT MICROWAVE.
  • If you have frozen food so heat it up to boiling temperature so food is fully defrost and save to use.
  • Before offering baby check that food is not to hot and suitable to put in baby's mouth.
  • Keep food texture as puree or paste in the beginning then as your baby grows go on lumpy texture.
